[pəl'iːs], britische New-Wave-Popband, gegründet 1977 von Sting, eigentlich Gordon Matthew Sumner (* Wallsend 2. 10. 1951; Gesang, Bassgitarre), Stewart Copeland (* Alexandria [Virginia] 16. 7. 1952; Schlagzeug) und Henri Padovani (Gitarre); noch 1977 wurde Padovani durch Andy Summers (* Blackpool 31. 12. 1942; Gitarre) ersetzt. Nach ersten Erfolgen als Independent-Band brachte The Police 1979 ihre erste LP »Outlands d'Amour« auf den Markt; sie landete Hits wie »Roxanne« am laufenden Band und feierte alsbald weltweit große Erfolge mit ihrer vom Reggae beeinflussten und von prägnanten Riffs geprägten New-Wave-Popmusik. Nach weiteren Singlehits wie »So lonely« und Bestselleralben wie »Synchronicity« gab es zunehmend Soloaktivitäten der Bandmitglieder und Differenzen, die 1986 endgültig zur Trennung führten.
